George Russell won the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix for Mercedes from pole position, 0.196 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen. It is the 8th Grand Prix win for Russell in our archive and the 3rd win of the season.
Verstappen came from P8 to take the runner-up place, and Isack Hadjar completed the podium from P4.
It also moves the championship. Kimi Antonelli, the leader, finished P5, so Russell took 15 points out of the lead, which now stands at 66 points. There are 208 points still available.
How the race turned
Russell started from pole and finished first; the classification records the result rather than the order lap by lap.
The biggest gain in the field belonged to Kimi Antonelli, up eleven places from P16 to P5, in the sister car to the winner. At the other end, Oscar Piastri started P3 and finished P13. In all, ten classified cars finished ahead of where they started.
